PREVIOUSLY IN THE MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD REVISITED...
When the plane is running out of fuel, Ben lands at an airport in Tennessee so they can refill the plane. While at the airport, the group meets Gertrude, a teenage supermodel from Europe, who informs them that an evil man named Philippe Lumiere is planning to rob the cities of gold.
AND NOW...
"This is just dreadful!" Alexis cried. "These evil men are planning to kill innocent people just to plunder their cities for wealth!"
"What are we going to do?" Stephanie asked. "I know we have to do something, that we all agreed we have to do something, but what? We don't even know where to find Philippe!"
"Gertrude, do you have any idea where Philippe might be?" Ben asked.
Gertrude thought for a moment. "Yes," she said, "I think I do. He is a very sneaky man, so I'm supposing that he is hiding somewhere that is very hard to find. Let's see, he is in Paris...of course! There is an old abandoned warehouse that no one's been to in years. I just bet he's in there! I have a hunch!"
"Well, if your hunch is right, there's no time to lose! The plane's already been fueled up!" Ben exclaimed. "We must get into the airplane and fly there immediately and find out exactly what Philippe plans to do so we can stop him! Come on, everybody, let's go!"
The whole group climbed into the plane and took off into the sky once more. They flew and flew until they reached the abandoned warehouse in Paris that Gertrude had mentioned. They were quite tired after flying all night but knew there was no time to sleep. They had to find out Philippe's plan so they could stop him and save the lives of the people of the cities of gold. Quietly they landed on top of the roof of the warehouse.
"Great," Stephanie said. "We're on top of the roof and we can't get down into the building. I don't even see a stairway that leads down there."
Matthew searched around and saw a button. "Look, guys!" he exclaimed. "I wonder if this is a secret passageway." The group joined him by the button, and he pushed it. Sure enough, a small door on top of the roof opened to reveal a long, winding set of stairs. Matthew grinned. "I knew it," he said. "Come on, everybody, let's go."
Everyone quietly followed him down the stairs. As they climbed down, Gertrude whispered, "Wow, Matthew, you're really smart."
Matthew blushed. "Aw, shucks," he whispered back.
The group kept tiptoeing until they heard voices. They peeked into a nearby room, trying to be unnoticed. They saw Philippe Lumiere himself. He was talking to his cohorts. "Here's what we do," he said. "We dress in camouflage and clown masks and hide in bushes around the cities of gold. The moment we see anyone from the cities come outside, we will kill them and then destroy the rest of the town and steal the gold." Philippe's cohorts nodded their approval.
Just then one cohort with very sharp eyes looked up and saw the group. "Boss!" he exclaimed. "We have intruders!"
The criminals ran toward the group, who took off and ran away. As they were running, Elizabeth tripped on her shoelaces and fell. Stephanie turned around to help her up and see if she was all right. Just as she did, she and Ben and various other members of the group were grabbed by Philippe and his cohorts!
"Let us go!" Lionel yelled.
"No way!" yelled the cohort who was holding Ben. Suddenly he noticed Ben and Stephanie's bracelets. "Look, boss!" he said to Philippe. "These two brats wear the bracelets that open the doors to the buildings of the cities of gold!"
"Hand them over, you little rats!" Philippe yelled at Ben and Stephanie.
"No!" Ben yelled. "We'll never give you our bracelets!"
"That's right!" Stephanie yelled. "We know you plan to kill the people and steal their gold! We will not give you our bracelets so you can do that!"
Philippe pulled their bracelets off. "You will do what I say!" he roared. Then, to his cohorts, he said, "Escort these spies to our secret prison where we keep spies before we decide how to kill them!"
Everyone in the group gasped. After that, they were led away to the prison.
TO FOLLOW...
The group worries about what will become of them and how the cities of gold will be saved if they are killed. Soon they find that they are able to trick a prison guard into letting them out so Ben and Stephanie can retrieve their bracelets, but will they be able to save the inhabitants of the cities of gold in time?
