Living Victorious over sin through Fearing God

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather be afraid of God, Who can destroy both body and soul in hell.” (Mt. 10:28 TEV)
The Lord Jesus Christ clearly speaks to us here to ‘be afraid of God’. The way we live will prove whether we really are afraid of God. The fear which is told here is not about fear of punishment, for if we live holy lives in fear of God’s judgmental nature, that holiness will never be true holiness. But this fear is concerning God’s hatred towards sin. At first view, we might assume that we should fear God and live holy lives because otherwise He would send us to hell. But Jesus told this just for the sake that we remind ourselves every time we come under sinful opportunities of the fact that sinners cannot enter God’s presence; and by that reminding we take care to stay away from sin’s trap. He told this so that we will always and every time be aware of the fact that we should be away from sin without which God’s presence will become absent in our lives.
In every nation, criminal offences are being committed daily. The judicial courts in those countries give the punishment the criminals deserve. But even then, more and more atrocities are being done. The truth that we should know at this point is that Satan is encouraging people to live impure lives. There is an evil power that makes people do all kinds of wicked acts. Fearing a nation’s stand against crime is very much needed. But there are hundreds upon thousands who have no fear of worldly judgment.
What can be done about this? Unless you fear God, you cannot have victory over your sinful nature. The fear of the Lord is diminishing in many people’s lives, and so they succumb to the devil’s voice and end up in a horrible situation where they cannot find a door to come out of their terrible guilt. Just one thought or desire to sin is capable enough to drive us away from joy to a state where we despise our very selves. So we need to fill our hearts with the fear of God in order that sin may have no dominion over us.
Friend, let me ask you a question – Do you live a true Christian life? What is the source of your spiritual growth? For what reason do you obey God? Let me believe that you follow Christ not because of fear of the punishment of hell, but it is an evidence that you truly respect His Sacrifice on the cross. Remember that the One Who did not keep aside to bear terrible pain for us to save us from sin is the same Christ Who will throw us in hell if we die in sin. Yes, the God Who is with us now can leave us if we play with His grace and not take sin as a serious matter.
Let me be assured you have understood what I want to tell my beloved readers through this article. If you really, by the bottom of your heart, love God, then, you will fear Him. You will never ever do what displeases Him. You will never give your senses to feel, hear, or see evil. You will guard your tongue and you will protect your hands and legs from all sinful deeds.
Let this article be a message of hope to all those who desire to walk uprightly. There is no other emotional power other than the fear of God. Many have tasted its goodness and are living a life worthy of God’s Kingdom. You too are called to honour God through trembling. Let us examine our lives once more and commit ourselves to God’s hands completely. Without fearing Him, we cannot love Him.
