I Reminisce

I have become accustomed to the combined celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. This is a switch because I add Veteran’s Day to the mix.

I reminisce over a late 1950’s childhood Thanksgiving dinner. With immediate family and many from my extended family, we gathered for a traditional Thanksgiving meal around Aunt Jessie and Uncle Wallace Ford’s dining room table.

At 65 years of age, not much of that dinner comes back to mind. I do recall the presence of two adult cousins, Don and Bob, sons of Aunt Jessie and Uncle Wallace. Don, then serving in the US Navy, Bob in the Air Force, they wore dress uniforms.

At a young and impressionable age, I sensed the significance of them being service men. Unknowingly, I was storing that family gathering in my treasure chest of holiday memories.

In that regard, say a prayer for all active service men and women unable to celebrate with their families this holiday season. Many elderly or disabled veterans live in veterans hospitals or veterans nursing homes; they also need prayer support.

During the holidays, they will hunger not so much for turkey or ham, as the gift of compassion expressed through cards or visits. If we willingly give of ourselves, we give unto the LORD.

“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me (Matthew 25:35-36 HCS).”
