John Mark McMillan wrote a beautiful song a few years back, one that has become quite popular for contemporary worship services in Christian churches all over the nation. Singing about God's love for us is incredible to be a part of and it can be a great experience for us and our relationship with Him when we are in the midst of singing this song of praise to Him.
There was a time for about 7 months when we sang this song at church every Sunday, Wednesday, really whenever we had the opportunity to do so. I loved it so much! The song was simple yet so deep and each time I listened to it and sang it I could feel God. During that time frame where this song was a daily event, I began to tear up during it, and other times my gut would ache and the song came to life within me. It is hard to explain the effect it had on me, all I can say is that the song started messing me up. It stopped being just a song and became something that brought me to tears, happy and sad ones, every time I heard the song playing. And to this day it has that affect on my heart and soul.
I was sitting in my room late one night when I felt like God was guiding me to write down some things about this song. I grabbed a dictionary, opened my Bible, picked up the pen and paper and put the song on repeat. Once I prepared myself for God to move on my heart I began to dissect the song and write out the revelations God was opening up to me! It was an incredible time for me. I spent about two hours in this atmosphere hearing from God and putting it on paper, all the while this song was continually working on my heart.
I do not want to try and write out everything I put on the paper that night because I used 4 pages myself, but I want to highlight some parts of the song and some of the things God revealed to me.
The first line of the song is what started working on my heart. There is more to this line that the words that are sung. You can hear this song with your ears, but hearing it with your spirit is when you started gaining this understanding of His love. McMillan wrote it so beautifully, "He is jealous for me". He, in this line, is God. The creator of the universe, the world, nature, people and all the intricate things on this planet, He, that man, is jealous for me. He desires me so badly that He gets jealous when I do not give my whole self to Him. A lot of the time we picture jealousy as a dirty feeling, but what it means is "fearful of being replaced". God is fearful of losing relationship with us. And what I love most about this opening line is that it says "me". Me is a singular word, this means that the creator of everything who reigns over all, is incredibly jealous for me, and you. More than anything, He wants our love and attention. This intimate relationship was God's intention for everyone when we were created, and despite the sinful actions of us, that is still what He desires. Wow, do you get that?
Now for my favorite line in this song. Well, first off, the entire bridge part of the song is incredible. And if you listed to the deep implications of the lyrics, you will being to understand more fully the greatness of God. He is good, all the time!
The opening line of the bridge is this, "We are His portion and He is our His prize". So many times I sang through this line just thinking, "aw, that's cool". But I decided to do a little research on the word 'portion' because I did not know what it meant in this context. When I looked it up, I immediately started crying. (Listen to this definition by the Spirit and not through your own ears and understanding). A 'portion' is "money and/or property given to the groom from the bride before a wedding ceremony". Quick question for the sake of elaborating. How does Christ describe the relationship between Himself and the church? A marriage. Since the church is not a location but the body of believers, each of us is a gift for the church. The church is Christ's bride and we are the gift given to the groom (Christ). Can you believe this is how God sees us? As His gift! We are God's portion in the marriage ceremony between the church and Christ! Incredible. Christ is our prize, His grace, mercies, love, forgiveness and joy are our prize as followers of Him.
There is so much depth in this song that can only be understood by the power of the Spirit so I challenge everyone to get to that place of intimacy with Christ so that we can begin to more fully understand the love of the Father! Listen to the lyrics and go into depth of what John Mark McMillan understood during his time of intimacy with God. He has a video to the reason behind him writing this song and i encourage everyone to watch the video because it is one more step to attaining the understanding of the love God has for us. 1 John 3:1: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"
