Kyle Watson, 15, had found a magazine left in his friend’s locker at the high school. It was the kind of magazine that Kyle had heard about but had never seen. In fact, he had never thought he would ever see one.

When school was over for the day, he quickly forced the magazine into his backpack then left under a semi-lit hallway. On his walk home, he saw his two friends, Sean and Enrique, racing on their bicycles down the street. Kyle rapidly but calmly walked towards his house while Sean and Enrique pedaled quickly in an effort to keep up with him.

"Kyle! Hey. Kyle! Wait for us!” Sean shouted to Kyle as he and Enrique drew closer to him. “Man, you’re sure in a hurry to get to wherever! What’s the big rush?”

Now standing in front of his house Kyle opened the gate to where he lived. “Hey, guys come on in,” Kyle said. “Let’s get something to eat and drink!”

Kyle pulled out the comic books that were covering up his main prize and found the magazine. He quickly leafed through the magazine to find the pages with brilliant color photographs of naked women. Kyle paid special attention to the photograph of a brunette featured in the centerfold. “This is great!” Kyle said. All three boys giggled and made a variety of derogatory statements and jokes as they pored over the pictures throughout the magazine.

“Hey guys! Look at this!” Enrique started to say when Kyle heard a noise that sent a jolt through his head like a bolt of lightening. The automatic garage door opener was slowly lifting then stopped to allow a car to enter the garage.

“Oh, no! It’s my mom! She’s not supposed to be home until 5:30 PM!” Kyle whispered hoarsely. As the car drove into the garage, Kyle stuffed all his magazines into his backpack while Sean and Enrique scurried out through the front door onto the side street.

“Kyle, what have you been up to?” asked his mother as she placed her car keys into her purse.

Kyle’s head hung low and was unable to look his mother in the eye. Ashamed and unable to speak clearly, he finally said in a low voice, “Just some magazines!”

“You mean ‘pornographic’ magazines? Magazines with naked woman in them? X-rated magazines?”

“Oh, mom, what’s wrong with magazines about naked women in them. Lots of boys and men look at them and read them. Museums all over the world have sculptures, drawings and pictures of naked people in them.

“You must feel something is not right. You’re sweating as though it is over 100 degrees in a 65 degree temperature, air conditioned house. You look as guilty as any person I’ve ever seen.”

As he sat down at the table, Kyle still could not look at his mother. “Mom, you and dad have always told me that God made sex and that it is beautiful, healthy and not dirty.”

“Kyle, me and your father do recognize human sexuality as a good and beautiful expression from within the context of marriage between a man and a woman as God intends it to be. Pornographic magazines ARE not sexuality. Pornography is a false presentation of mostly female who are mostly exploited. The pictures you look at in a pornographic magazine are false presentations of women who are not real, who do unreal things, telling boys and men who read and look at them things most woman do not look like and doing thing most would never agree to. It is just not who women really are. Pornography is not about how women and men relate in a loving sexual relationship. It is ugliness presented in an ugly way!

Kyle, what if I took your skateboard and used it to clean out our septic tank?” his mother asked.

“I wouldn't like that. I’d really be mad at you or dad. I’d also think you didn’t respect my stuff or me,” said Kyle.

Kyle’s mother shuddered. “You certainly have the right idea. Well, sexual expression is actually the same. It’s beautiful, important and special for that special occasion—that is, marriage between one man and one woman. In the same way human sexual expression has to be treated with respect and the dignity given it by God Himself. Exposing your eyes and mind to the ugliness of dirty magazines or telling dirty, cheap jokes about naked women is—“

“Like using my skateboard to clean out our septic tank!” finished Kyle

“Exactly.”

Prayer: Almighty Father, help us develop Godly, healthy and respectful attitudes about our sexuality so that sex can always be a wonderful expression of unconditional love between a married man and woman. Father teach us never to regard sexual expression as nasty, dirty or ugly but as your gift for a man and woman in the sanctity of the marital relationship you ordained and blessed. Amen.
