Toward the end of John 16 Jesus tells his disciples that the time is at hand when they will be scattered to their own (things) and will leave him alone, yet he assured them that he would not be alone but that his Father would be with him. That reminded me of the phrase so rampant in the 60’s and 70’s of “doing your own thing.” That was considered a positive practice, breaking away from mere convention and conformity. But when it comes to our relationship with Jesus, doing our own thing means we are not minding as our priority the things of God, which means in turn that we are leaving Jesus God’s Son alone.
Yet at the same time Jesus reminds us that he is never alone because His Father is with him (except for that moment on the cross when he became sin for us and that fellowship was necessarily but temporarily broken, because there is nor can there be fellowship between sin and holiness). He was not saying, “Never mind, your fellowship isn’t important, I have the Father.” Rather he was longing for them then as He longs for us today to enter more consistently into that fellowship that he has with the Father and that They want to share with us. Wow! The very fellowship of the Godhead.
