Our Shield and Buckler Be

"Your truth is our shield and buckler" it says of the Lord in the 4th verse of the 91st psalm. The shield referred to here was big and it curved part way around the body, so that a warrior could hide himself completely behind it and even find some protection from above or from a blind side. The buckler for its part was a smaller piece of armor designed for hand to hand combat. Some source may have it the other way around and there's no need to quibble with that. The point is that when they are mentioned together, how complete a protection is provided by God's truth! All the way from silently contaminating forces and longer distant physical threats that are removed from our direct control and awareness, to struggles that are hands-on, nitty-gritty, right in our faces and contending with us at eye-level. The shield is associated with faith by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6, and leather shields were oiled in those days for maintenance. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit so, by the Spirit of God, it is given us to BELIEVE in divine truth for our own and others' protection.
