Growing up, I had no idea of what love really looked like. My mother was married to her second husband...of which I was adopted by him. I never knew my birth father, though i asked about him multiple times to my mother and stepfather. Growing up, mainly I was mistreated by those who were supposed to protect me. When I was 4-years-old, my little brother and I were on a camping trip with our grandparents, while my step-father was at the hospital with my mother, who was giving birth to her 3rd child.
The last day of our little camping trip, our grandparents took us down to the beach. I was thrilled, for I loved to be down by the water, to feel the cool water wash over my toes, and to feel the sea breeze upon my cheeks. Our grandparents wanted to do sand castles, which I did for the time being, but my heart was set on swimming. Mind you, I had no swimming training yet.
Then I persistently appealed to my grandmother, until at last she consented and her and our grandfather each took us by the hand to lead us into the water. my brother and I playfully splashed water at each other, as our grandmother held me up above the water and our grandfather held my brother. Then my grandmother, who was getting tired, insisted we go back into shore. My brother, who was 3 at the time, easily consented, but i wasn't ready to come out.
I urgently pleaded with my grandparents, crying out," Please, Grandma. Please,Please...let me stay in the water. I promise I wont go any deeper..I will stay chest level..I promise." So, with some reservations, both of my grandparents consented.
Happily, I was side-stepping through the water, until the sandy ground in the water on which I was joyfully plodding through, began to give way. All in an instant, my joy was turned to fear, as the sandpit in the water, began to pull me under. Frantically, I began to try to push my self up with my arms.
As soon as I began to cry out to my grandmother the first time, the first flow of water entered my lungs. Three times I attempted this trying to call to my grandmother on the shore. Three times I had failed.
When the third attempt had failed my body went under. (Before I tell you the rest, I will tell you, I had no Christian upbringing, so I didn't at that time know Jesus. My family was Catholic and Jewish.)
All of a sudden, I began to cry out to God to save me. I also cried out, "Lord Jesus, please save me! Oh, Lord, please help me." Before I blacked out due to so much water inhabiting my lungs, I felt a strong arm go around
me.
All of a sudden, there I was standing on the shore, handing the hand of a Man whose presence felt warm, and peaceful. Solemnly, I gazed at this peaceful man, and as if I knew I was going to be safe, and I said," I'm ready to go." The man looked at me, and said in a peaceful, yet instructive tone," No, Dear Child, it is not time to go. " At this, I was dumbfounded and confused. The man pointed over to a great big commotion of people who were all gathered at the edge of the beach. He explained that the small child who paramedics were trying to revive on the shore was me. Oh, I said," That can't be, Sir. I am standing safe right here."
The peaceful, gentle Man assured me that it was in fact me lying on the shore. Then He said, " You need to go back home. If you do not, your mother will be really sad. She will miss you." So I agreed with the Man's comments.
I was instantly placed back into my body, and woke up choking up lots of water. Then i stood up, walked up the beach to grab my towel, and dried off.
Upon inquiring to my grandmother to where was the man who saved me, my grandmother simply responded, with her mouth dropped open," He just
disappeared. You shall never mention this to anyone, especially not your mother." Wow. This is a true event that actually happened in my life. I never forgot that whole event when I was 4-years-old, from which the Lord brought me back from the dead in a physical way. God has such amazing compassion on His creations. He looked upon a small child, such as I, and gave me hope. He showed me love. I never forgot that first expression of Love our Creator gave to me.
