Brave Grandma

Leticia Olivarez, 17, sat on the living room couch watching her great grandmother mixing what would soon be a cake. Leticia’s gaze slipped from her grandmother’s quick stirring spoon that worked the ingredients into a smooth liquid batter to her hands. They were old beaten hands. So old that the skin seemed to be like a see-through layer of film over bulging veins and muscles. Leticia’s grandmother couldn’t stir the way she used to but she still did a great job of stirring at 96 years of age. She no longer could hear or see as well as she used to but her wit and ability to tell a great laughable joke or story was still present.
“Gram, I hope you live for a long, long time! You’re the greatest!”
She laughed in a cracking voice, “You can’t expect much more time when you get to be my age, Leticia.”
Her laughter and good nature puzzled her and she wondered if she could actually continue on this forbidden subject of death. “Gram, do you ever think about dying?”
“Believe it or not I often think about it,” she said chuckling.
“Doesn’t it scare you to think about it?”
“I can’t say that it didn’t and hasn’t,” said grandma. “But there’s not much to be afraid of that I can see. The worst part is thinking that I might not be around to see you get married even though you’re 17.”
“Gram, I’ll miss you too,” Leticia said sadly.
“Oh, come on now! I haven’t kicked the bucket yet nor am I dying as you can see. I’m still kickin’,” as she laughed out loud.
“But Gram, I hate to think about you dying”
“I’m ready to meet my maker. I have prepared myself each night,” her grandmother said.
“Gram, how come it doesn’t bother you?”
“Well, Jesus and me go back a ways together. I suppose there are things I would change if I had it all to do over again. But that’s all settled. I know full well that I’ve not been the best person but through Jesus’ saving death along with His unconditional love for me and His boundless mercy, I am saved. So I figure I’ll be in the best of hands when my time to die comes whenever that time is. Leticia could you get me a couple of cake pans off of my shelf? Thank you, honey.”
“Gram, I have to admit age does have its privileges. I hope and pray I’m as brave as you are and as strong in my faith when my time comes. I love you Gram!”
