I found a little something
So costly yet so worthless.
Many are deceived;
Think it worth its cost,
And so in it invest their all.

For a while I followed suit:
I thought I could afford it.
Why, it made me feel so good!
I didn’t use it often.
Like a precious garment,
I used it once a while.
And when I did, I felt so right
Indeed quite justified;
For after all I did not waste it
On matters of no value.

But then along the way I found
This robe but nought to me did add:
For there I was all puffed up, but –
Not a little bit increased!
This robe of mine deceived by size;
So full it was, and yet so empty!

What a bully too it turned out to be!
It took up all the space where gems
Would otherwise have thrived.
By gems I mean humility
Love and meekness, self-control.
They jostled for space
But soon could not breathe
‘Til finally even grace took its leave.

Through tears of bitter struggle
Through God’s pure and loving eyes
I examined my robe again –
So expensive, hard to maintain
Should I this costly garb retain?

My Father, my friend, He answered me:
“Give it to me” He gently commanded
“What?” my flesh protested
“Something this dear?
That couldn’t be God
The voice is not clear!
This excellent robe?
So big and so strong…
If gone you are done
And will shrivel to nothing!”

“Give it to me” God gently commanded.
“For where I come from
Which is where you are bound,
The less you are the more you become.”
