Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Matthew 22:37-39, ESV

I almost missed it.

There was too much going on, too much on my plate, too many irons in the fire. Mounting burdens and concerns threatened to suffocate the joys of Life. I was trapped and blinded by the blur of busyness.

Then came Love. Like a struck match, Love sparked and fizzled, then burst aflame. The precious flame flickered with the merest breath. It might have consumed itself, as matches do, but Love, God’s Love, is impossible to snuff out. It ignites its surroundings with a sudden heated blaze out of nowhere. Indeed, the flame of Love, like the Wind, comes and goes as it wills.

What is this Love? What compares with it?

This Love is unknown in the natural hearts of decent women and men. It is foreign in human experience. This awesome and perfect Love is often regarded as unknowable and absurd. It is more valuable than and rises above all imagined possessions, emotions and relationships. All of life and all of creation cannot equal this Love. Its depth is unfathomable, its width and height are immeasurable. It is eternal, and imminent; it originates from only one pure source: Father God, Himself.

Without this Love, our diseased spirits burden us like heavy filthy luggage and we suffer in subtle and grievous ways throughout our brief earthly existence. Without the Love God extends to us, our eternal doom is certain.

This Love is freely given yet is infinitely costly. So that we would be able to identify with and experience this Love, it has been made manifest; the babe we know as Jesus the Christ, who was born to die in order that the blackened souls of Man might be cleansed.

There are no conditions attached to its reception, yet why is it that so few receive this free gift of Love, so few ensconce it in the center of their being and place it first among all of life’s activities? What must be done to fully embrace this Love? Simply this: receive it, return it to the Giver and share it with others.

God’s Love. Don’t miss it for the world!

Heavenly Father, your love, who became flesh in Jesus Christ, is all we need. Help us to receive Him fully, and completely. Help us to share your magnificent gift with others, that they too might find eternal joy! Amen.
