The Winding Road

The road swerves and the car lurches
Hands tighten and heads jerk.
And yet another jolt pulls right and then left.
A breath is taken and effort renewed.
A refocus on the task at hand.
A letter added, and then a line.
Control gained, progress made
And then, a bump, a jolt, and a whack.
All is lost, erased, and forgotten.
Swerve!

The journey is long.
Plans were made. A time for creating,
A time for doing what I had planned.
And the bumps come and come again.
Letters typed and words completed.
A thought comes, an idea inspired
And then a swerve and another lurch
Thoughts jumble, concepts blur.
It cannot be done!
Jolt!

What shall I do? Tighten the grasp?
Slow the vehicle? Curse the road?
I will overcome this unruly road.
I will persist and create what I want to create.
Ow! Another push, jolt, and shove.
Nothing flows. Words flop.
Sentences die.
I will control this road.
I will create this poem.
Bump!

God? What do you want?
Where are you leading? Are you here in the bumps?
Are you leading in the curves?
Or in these rambling thoughts and misplaced fingers?
Are you creating perfection in my life?
Will you guide my thoughts? Imbue my spirit?
Will your love reveal itself in me?
Will your fruits be seen?
Will patience come?
Smack!

You have loved and given all there is
But the road is rough and the journey long.
I fight the curves and attempt to go as I will.
I focus on my path and my way
And yet the road goes on.
What's this? Has it been smoothed?
Have I found your road and your way?
Fill me with your Spirit, Lord.
And lead me in your path.
Peace.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father: You have provided everything we need to lead lives filled with your Spirit. You have brought us to a fertile land and blessed us with your bounty. You have laid the foundation for our lives, erased all of our sins, and eased all of our burdens. From this moment on, our lives should reflect your glory. Everything we do in every aspect of our lives shall be a sacrifice of worship for you and an act of holiness for the world to see. We know that when we turn and listen to your voice you will guide and comfort. When we feel your Spirit we become the living Christ in the world around us. But, oh, how we drift. How often we turn our heads and attempt to create our own world, follow our own gods, and focus our own needs. Lord, keep us on your path. Show us that your way leads to your glory. Relax our grip and inspire us to give up control. When we do, the manner in which we live our lives will become a holy testament to your glory. Thank you for all your love. This is our prayer as, once again, we turn and ask 'where is the Lord?' Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
