Between The Lines is chapter 25 of Fine Line, sequel to Woodcutter’s Revival. Both historical fiction novels are written by Jerry Slauter and set at the beginning of the final phase of the Industrial Revolution. Chapter 26, The Race is On was posted earlier for Memorial Day weekend.

The Editor-in-Chief and Daryl decided to cover the inaugural running of the Indianapolis 500 in 1911. Michael wanted to accompany them, as the track was only about 90 miles from home. Michal was also going to attempt to get Stewart away to relax, since has never quite recovered from the case in which he represented Cynthia David from the Indiana Central State Asylum. They camped in the infield of the huge oval at the Indianapolis Speedway.

The Editor-in-Chief and Daryl were covering the practice runs, visiting the pits, interviewing drivers, mechanics, and car and track owners. Stewart and Michael returned to the camp fire and engaged in conversation. Michael learned that something else is bothering Stewart, as he discussed some books that he received from Judge Manly Halls widow.

The books were about the secret order into which Judge Hall was attempting to recruit Stewart. They were not supposed to be read by people outside the secret society or even by initiates of the lower levels. Michael was just beginning to understand some of the mental and emotional anguish Stewart was suffering.

The following excerpt takes place:

Daryl and Richard soon returned from the track. Michael asked, “Is anybody ready for supper?”

They decided to drive back to a local café they saw on the way in by the Crawfordsville Highway. While they were eating, the talk around them was on the race. Some of the people were placing bets on the number of deaths and injuries that might occur in the race. A man at the next table asked Richard, “Hey, how many drivers and mechanics do you think will be killed or injured? Some say twenty.”

Richard, unable to hide his indignation answered, “None, I hope.”

The man said, “What are you, goodie-two-shoes?

Richard calmly responded, “No, I just take no delight in seeing other peoples’ suffering.”

The man, with a surprised expression, turned and talked to the people at his table, ignoring Richard the remainder of the time the four ate. After supper, they returned to camp and sat around the campfire talking until well after midnight. Richard gave some updates from the paper articles he had been reading and some of the interviews he conducted in the pits.

Woodcutter’s Revival is available to read now. Fine Line will be available in late 2014.
