THE POTPOURRI SERIES


Potpourri # 3 is the third in a series, recently released by E-booktime, in print format and likewise available at www.amazon.com (Kindle) and www.bn.com (Barnes and Noble Nook) as an e-book. These cover a wide range of topics.
Potpourri was the first of this triad. “Common Sense & the Conspiracies” was its initial entry. In this regard, it is said that the problem with common sense is that it is so uncommon. While it goes without saying that conspiracy theories abound.
“Covenant echoes” was the second topic. This alerts the reader to the critical importance of covenants in Scripture. Incidently, the common meal had covenant implications, allowing for why Jesus was so harshly criticized for eating with sinners (non-observant).
“Amos Still Speaks” was its final entry. This delves into the continued relevance of the prophetic text for today. Which recalls the saying, “The more some things change, the more other things remain constant.”
Potpourri # 2 likewise contains three brief studies. “The Epic Struggle” explores the spiritual conflict with entrenched forces of evil. Accordingly, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:12).
“Jesus as Sage” then touches on his public ministry in term of wisdom literature. Ben Witherington III observes that this is the most pervasive aspect, and consequently deserving of special attention.
“James, Jesus’ Sibling” provides a brief account of his life and correspondence. As such, it notes striking similarities to the teaching of Jesus. Accordingly, “While the church of James’ day was experiencing phenomenal growth, it was also struggling with persisting problems. There was also a persisting temptation to take on the ways of the world, resulting in giving deference to those with financial means. Conflict in the fellowship was common. James set out to address these and other prevailing conditions” (p. 140).
Potpourri # 3 now invites our attention. Initially, “The Jesus Niche” considers Jesus’ pristine humanity, not to the exclusion of his deity. Recalling the assessment, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15). Thus serving as a precedent, although we fall tragically short of the human ideal implied.
“The Rainbow Bridge” accounts for the second of these studies. It “is a graphic way of expressing the transit from earthly life to heaven. One’s comments as he or she nears this event have been recalled as of special significance. As if a confirmation of priority considerations. Sometimes with a special insight not previously accounted for. While not to the exclusion of all that transpired up to that time but rather in context” (p. 111).
“What is the Question?” then calls attention to the importance of refining our questions so as to get favorable results. “What is the question? This often seems obscure. In our haste to provide credible answers, we lose sight of the purpose. As if to shoot at a target obscured by brush” (p. 267).
Will there be a fourth in the series? It is hard to say. I have lived a full and meaningful life, for which I am sincerely appreciative. Now retired for the third time, I have more time to spend in writing, which I have considered an extension of my teaching vocation.
Not surprising, some topics seem a higher priority than others. Conversely, certain of these lend themselves to briefer treatment. It is in keeping with this latter consideration that I might consider an addition to the series. While along with a sensitivity to divine guidance and enablement. Thus to reap where others have sown, and sow that others may reap.
