“Friendship Evangelism”

We’ve all heard the phrase, “You may be the only Jesus someone ever sees,” right? Well, have you ever stopped and thought about what that might really mean, what it might look like? I believe that image changes from culture to culture – and it took leaving America to help me see that!
How do you “be Jesus” in a culture where “blatant” evangelism brings back deep and painful memories of oppression, suppression, and war? How do you balance sensitivity to that culture with not being ashamed of the Gospel? What does real “Friendship Evangelism” look like?

Read John 2: 1-10.

What is the ministry action?

How many people witnessed this event, or saw it as a “ministry?”



Jesus did not pray aloud before performing this miracle. He didn’t explain to all the wedding guests that He was performing this miracle because He is the Savior of the World and through Him they should come to saving faith in Christ. Based on the Scriptures, only the disciples, the servants, and Mary knew what had happened, yet everyone at the wedding benefited from this act of ministry. It even brought blessings to the bridegroom – Jesus did not even receive credit for His act from the master of the banquet!

All Christ did was a small, seemingly meaningless act, which had huge ramifications.

What happened as a result of the ministry act?

Verse 11 tells us that because of this small act of friendship, “and His disciples put their faith in Him” (emphasis added)! Because Christ was willing to do a small favor for His friends, His own disciples put their faith in Him!

Application:
Think about the people you are going to encounter today: Your boss, a shop keep, a waiter/waitress, who else?

What are some acts of friendship you can do today that would minister to someone in a non-threatening way? You will be “Jesus” for them…you will be their friend.
