When you look in the mirror, who do you see? Who is the person staring back at you? How well do you know them? If you were to describe them in one word what would it be?
Some of us would fail miserably if asked to describe the person we are because we do not really know who we are and more often than not we underestimate the person we are because of the circumstances we have been through and because of the things people (who do not know anything about us) have told us and which we have accepted as correct.
Twelve men were sent to spy out the land that God had promised the children of Israel and when they returned, they had different views of what they had seen and their views were really based on how they saw themselves. While all twelve agreed that there were giants in the land, ten out of twelve said they were unable to possess the land because in comparison to the giants they were grasshoppers. No one called them grasshoppers they described themselves as such; they said, “We were grasshoppers in their sight (the giants) and in our sight.”(Paraphrased) The other two however saw themselves as giant killers. They said, “let us go up at once and take the land for we are able to take it.” (Paraphrased) The truth is, if you see yourself as a grasshopper there is nothing you say or do that will make other people see you as anything other than that, a grasshopper. If you look in the mirror and say negative things to the person staring back at you, you give others permission to view you the same way and to treat you accordingly.
Interestingly enough, only the two who saw themselves as giant killers were able to enter into the land that had been promised them; all those who saw themselves as grasshoppers and said as much, died in the wilderness and never entered into the land of promise. Similarly, many have died in the wilderness (which symbolises a place of mediocrity or obscurity) and all because they saw themselves as being unable to go into the Promised Land (which symbolises a place of success or limelight). Until you change your perspective of the person you are, you will never be able to enter into your land of success just like the ten ‘grasshopper’ spies were not able to enter into the land of milk and honey which the Lord had promised the Israelites.
The truth is you are more than you think you are, so go to the mirror, look at that special and unique person staring back at you and say, “You are not a grasshopper, you are a giant killer.”
