Curriculum Adjustment
By
Brenda K. Blakely

Oatmeal on the faces of the two boys and dripping from the ceiling of the kitchen set my mind in motion. How did this figure in home school curriculum?

In my best “teacher” manner I had meticulously planned for this first day of home schooling our two boys, age 10 and 14. In good ‘teacher/Mom’ format I served them a nutritious breakfast and was busy about setting up the “classroom” and preparing for my students.

It was time. I went to the kitchen to tell them to finish up, put their dishes in the sink, brush their teeth and get ready for devotion time. Empty bowls, spoons launching oatmeal toward my kitchen walls and the oatmeal dripping from the ceiling signaled my adrenaline flow and the waiting schoolroom and carefully planned curriculum was quickly forgotten.

My instinctive urge was to do them bodily harm there on the spot but they still had a mess to clean up. Best I can figure it must have been the grip of the Holy Spirit. We went down on our knees and our curriculum became prayer.

This kind of curriculum adjustment became a regular part of our home schooling as we sought guidance for our efforts to help our boys complete their education and the things that God made boys to do kept happening.
