Psalm 144:12 tells us to "Let our sons in their youth be as grown-up plants, and our daughters as corner pillars fashioned as for a palace." In this article I am going to speak to the fathers about their sons.

What does it take to be a grown-up plant? There are four ingredients, which also have a spiritual application: roots, water, sunlight, and good soil. Interestingly enough, the Bible talks about all four of these.

ROOTS

See that no ROOT of bitterness springs up and causes trouble. (Hebrews 12:15)

The love of money is the ROOT of all evil. (I Timothy 6:10)

For a son to be like a grown-up plant he must not allow bitterness in his life, and must not allow the earning of money to become a pattern of greed.

WATER

Jesus is the living WATER. (John 4:14)

For a son to be like a grown-up plant he must accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

SUNLIGHT

The Lord is LIGHT and salvation, and the LIGHT of the world to those who follow Him. (Psalm 27:1 and John 8:12)

For a son to be like a grown-up plant he must follow Jesus, in order to stay out of the darkness of the godless world.

SOIL

In the parable of the soils, good SOIL is like the man who hears the Word of God and understands it. (Matthew 13:23)

For a son to be like a grown-up plant he must consistently read and study the Bible, and apply it to his life.

Now, there are 2 results of being a grown-up plant, and again the Bible talks about them.

LEAVES

The LEAVES on a grown-up plant or tree will not wither, provided it is firmly planted by streams of water. (Psalm 1:3) The preceding context talks about meditating on the Word.

BEARING FRUIT

It will yield fruit in its season. (Psalm 1:3)

So as with a healthy plant, a godly son who is like a grown-up plant, will bear fruit, the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), the fruit of every good work (Colossians 1:10), and will gather fruit for eternal life. (John 4:36). He will also be known by his fruit. (Matthew 7:16)

I pray that my son will become like a grown-up plant. How about you?
