A question often posed by atheist, skeptics, and college students is can an omniscient God create a rock which He cannot move? The challenge of this question is, of course; if God is all powerful, then He can certainly create this rock, but if He cannot lift it, there must be a limit to His power, and therefore He cannot be all powerful. This, and other similar philosophical conundrums, are often ignored because they are logically incoherent; being little more than a play on words. This particular argument, however, I happen find quite enjoyable, because it actually has a logical, albeit confusing, answer.
The short answer to this question—can God create a rock which He cannot move?—is that yes, He can create this rock, but He can also move it. It seems illogical: how can God create something He cannot move, and simultaneously be able to move it? But it is perfectly reasonable to believe that God is fully capable of accomplishing this task. The key is to simply the problem to find what’s really being asked, then to take that information and use it to answer the question.
When simplified, the question really being asked is: What number is bigger than infinity? If the power of God is infinite, and God is asked to create a rock more powerful than He is, this rock must be heavier than infinity. The problem is, of course, that you cannot rise above infinity, seeing as it is not a fixed number. To solve this problem—what number is bigger than infinity?—it becomes necessary to envision a universe were infinity does not exist.
Now, imagine God creating another universe (He’s made one already, surely He can do it again), but this universe lacks the concept of infinity. Now, when God works within this creation, His power will be limited (not because He Himself is limited, but because the universe He created is limited). Therefore, we can place a number on God’s power within this other universe; one, for example. Now, imagine God creating a rock, with a weight of two; within the confines of said universe, God cannot lift the rock. However, from the perspective of our universe, where God is infinite, He can easily lift the rock.
Remember always: For God, nothing is impossible.
