Faith
One of the basic tenets of Christianity is faith; that we believe in something we cannot see. The bible is clear that believing in what we cannot physically experience is a necessity, in fact, most of what a Christian believes is based on faith; i.e. there is a God, God took human form as Christ, Christ died and was resurrected, etc.
Faith is a major foundation upon which Christianity is built, but faith alone is not enough. People of all religions believe in things they cannot see, and have faith that their beliefs are correct; if these other religions are false, and members of those religions have faith, as Christians have faith in their theology, then faith alone is not enough to provide a basis for belief. Although faith is essential for a Christian, if it was the only basis for belief then Christianity could scarcely be taken as more reliable than any other religion.
If faith alone is not enough to provide a reason to believe, then what is? The answer is of course, fact. Evidence, information from the real world, is also important for the Christian; in fact, the Bible even claims there is evidence of God in his creation, and challenges man to seek it out.
This is, in fact, one area where Christianity diverges from many other religions. Although faith is an essential part of the religion, it is not the whole of belief, and evidence of the truth is available to those looking for it. Many other religions exist with little or no evidence to proclaim them as true. The holy writings of the Buddha, for example, were not written until hundreds of years after the Buddha’s death, whereas every single book in the New Testament was written within the first century A.D., within 70 years of Christ’s death and resurrection. Within that amount of time it is plausible their were people still living who witnessed the acts of Christ personally, and most certainly these peoples children would have been around, yet none of them spoke out against what was being written. Also, many things written in both testaments have been validated throughout history.
Let us be thankful we have a God that has left his mark for us to find, so we do not walk blindly. For those who are unsure, seek God with all your heart and he will show himself.
