Holidays

Of late, there has been much debate over whether we, as members of society and as Christians, should say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas". Many valid points have been brought forth. However, there is one point that has not been presented in any of the discussions that I have heard and that I believe is a very important one. The point that I am referring to is the meaning of the word "Holiday". The word "Holiday" is a word with very simple roots. Those roots are the word "Holy" and the word "day". Therefore "Holiday" means "Holy day", in other words, a day that is set aside for the worship, adoration and reverence of God. As such "Holiday" should be used with extreme prejudice. To expound upon that; if someone were to call a buddhist festival a Holiday, they would be calling it Holy, and therefore saying that buddism is true. I am aware that many would respond, by saying, "But that festival is Holy to them." Holiness is objective, meaning that what is Holy is Holy and what is not Holy is not, no matter what anyone thinks or believes. Seeing a festival as Holy does not make it Holy. Choosing to not celibrate true Holidays, such as Christmas, does not make them any less Holy. In the Bible the words translated "Holy" are also translated "pure", "right", and "blameless".
I hope that this has made some things more clear for you and I encourage you to think about what you have read here, especially the next time that you consider saying"Happy Holidays".
