5 Things To Do This Christmas - 12/7/2013

Christmas is a blessed and often busy time of year. We all Cherish this special season; wanting to celebrate in a special way. Most would agree that noble and benevolent pursuits are the most valuable & important way to invest time at Christmas. I am writing today to suggest five things you can do (for free or almost free) this Christmas that will make your spirit bright!

READ TO THE ELDERLY: Find an assisted living facility near you and give them a phone call to set up a time when you can come and read Christmas stories to their residents. The elderly are often the most lonely people in our society Christmas can be a difficult time for them as many of their loved ones may have died; filling the Holiday with memories. Many of them are also fighting health issues. To these very special people, your love is spelled T-I-M-E.. Here’s a hint when you interact with them: Listen without limit & share words of love and encouragement.

MAKE A GIFT FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL: Often, we can’t remember from year to year what we received for Christmas. Consider this: If I asked you to make a list of what you received for Christmas last year could you do it? Now think about a gift someone made for you: Homemade gifts are always the most memorable. Whether you are a crafty person or not, you can make a gift that will make others feel incredibly special. Here are some ideas: Write a few things you like about that special person in a letter. Sign & Date it, print it (maybe even on special paper) and frame it. Other ideas are to do a Build-A-Bear (usually under $20) or a craft from pinterest. Last but not least, simple baking is always a great way to add Christmas cheer.

MINISTER TO YOUR MINISTER: As Christmas busy-ness picks up, it is easy to overlook those who care for our Spiritual needs. Even if you are not a regular Church attender, remember that your Pastor, Bishop, Minister, or Priest would be deeply touched to receive a card and/or a gift from you. Don’t know what to give? A simple gift card to your favorite restaurant or store means a lot. If you can’t give a gift, consider visiting your Church, Parrish, or Cathedral with equipment to wash your Pastor’s car or help around the church. Your offer might be accepted but even if not, the gesture will go a long way to brighten the Christmas season for both of you.

BAKE COOKIES FOR YOUR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT: My Father in Law is a retired fire chief so trust me on this: They like food. Make a couple dozen cookies or treats and take them to the fire station with a simple Thank you card & Christmas greetings. They are looking out for all of us and your recognition will go a long way to show that you care.

THANK A POLICEMAN: Like firefighters, our local Police are putting their lives on the line for our safety every day. When you see them out in public, take a moment to say “Thank you” for keeping the neighborhoods safe. Police have big hearts even though they sometimes seem pretty tough. They will be touched by your kind gesture.

May the Blessings of The Season Fill You and Your Loved Ones
