I Need Help

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Don’t let my heart be drawn to evil.
Psalm 141:3-4 (NIV)

What a great prayer, imagine how much grief we could be spared if we didn’t do or say certain things. Later in the Bible, James speaks of taming the tongue. James says the tongue is small but he compares it to the rudder of a ship and the bit in a horse’s mouth. The rudder and bit set direction. The tongue sets direction, and our words set direction. What we say what we write can direct our future. I believe there is a connection between our heart and our tongue. Our heart tells the tongue what to say and the fingers what to write. Our spiritual condition is on display in our words and writings.

Here the Psalmist knows just how difficult it is to tame a tongue. He is asking God to not only help him but to do it for him. He is begging and pleading and praying to God to guard his mouth, his tongue and his heart. He doesn’t want to fall into evil. He wants to live a clean and Godly life. He is aware of the sin and temptation lying in wait. He is aware that Satan is like a crouching lion waiting to pounce.

We are living in the same world the Psalmist is. Sin and temptation are at fever pitch. Satan doesn’t even have to crouch as low to hide. What God considers sin many just consider life choices and nobody will get hurt choices. Gossip has become routine, foul and foolish language
have become acceptable in many circles. What can we do about this? Well here is a start, repeat after me, Lord, set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Don’t let my heart be drawn into evil.
