“God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.” (1 Thess. 4:7 NLT)
Living a life of holiness is a great challenge in today’s world. The world is experiencing restlessness, trouble and fearfulness because of the many sins that are being committed. Satan’s deceptions are ruining the lives of not only the youth but also others as well. Sin has reached its highest peak due to the many temptations that come from the devil through the media, friend-circle etc. Where are we heading to? The above verse is as fresh as it was in the days of Paul. It commands us to live a holy life in this dark world. It reminds us to stay away from evil and all the desires of evil. The reason is clear: God has called us to be holy. And when God wants us to be something, there is no other option than obeying Him.
What does it mean to live a holy life? Anyone will say, “Be honest, be responsible, be active, help the poor and needy, show respect to others etc.” Okay! These are all ultimately necessary to live a holy life. But the basic necessity is the cleansing of sins by the blood of Jesus. God sent His only begotten Son who poured out His blood on the cross to be able to cleanse our sins. If Jesus had not died and risen for us, He could not have the ability to save us. Knowing this, He, being God, came to earth in human form and was nailed to the cross for all the sins of the world. Everyone who believes this and accepts Jesus Christ to come into his/her life becomes a child of God. Just pray in your words: “Gracious and loving Lord Jesus. I accept I am a sinner and need salvation. Today I repent and turn back from everything that displeases You. Please forgive me my sins and cleanse me by Your powerful and holy blood. From now on, I will be Your obedient child. Pour out Your grace on me to be so. In Your matchless name, I pray, Amen.” If you have prayed this prayer with child-like faith, you are now on the position to live a life of holiness according to the standards of holiness described in the Bible.
What must a person who has been redeemed through the blood of Christ do? How must he live? The first thing he must do is to read the Bible regularly because only the Bible is the instruction book for a believer. We must learn the commands of God from the Bible and bring them to regular practice in order to be holy. Being holy is nothing else but obeying God’s commands which are found in the Bible. Obeying them will make us live a beautiful life. They are not hard to follow, but very interesting if we do that depending on His grace. God has an expectation from us, to be holy, that’s all what He desires. So let us not fall in the trap of the devil and live an obedient life in this perishing world. This type of living alone is the way through which one can bring glory to God and reflect God’s character before others so that many can repent from their sins and start living a new life in Christ.
