Chapter 5
Managing the Universe
Imagine one morning as you awake, a quick look at the clock leaves you puzzled at the hour you see on the dial. The night seems to have been excessively long. You wonder why your bedroom feels like deep winter.
“Did I turn down the air condition that much, last night?” you ask yourself.
You peep through the window. Everything green yesterday evening looks shriveled and the leaves on the trees are a dark brown. The grass is frozen, and glistening in frost. As you open the front door, a rush of cold air envelopes you, and you hurry inside, slamming the door behind you. You race to turn on the heater, and stare at the typed News creeping across the television screen, “Scientists report that the rotation of the earth has become 1/10 its present rate. Days have been lengthened ten times. Expect the worst. Long nights will further freeze all vegetation, and long days will burn up all plant life.”
You shudder to contemplate famines extending far beyond the shores of Africa, causing the death of modern civilization. At this point, you may ask, “Does an intelligent designer maintain the earth’s rotation at the exact speed to preserve life on earth?” You remember a Sunday school song about God having the whole world in His hands. “Could it be that the God you had learned about had been keeping the earth rotating at the correct rate all this time?” What you learned about evolution in college, and the conclusions you made that the earth did its own thing, seemed to make no sense just then.
Of course, you may have thought to yourself previously, “Nothing caused the earth to rotate at its safe rate.” Now, you reason within yourself, “That’s like saying that the rotations that occur in the engines of a motor car driving down the road can take place without anyone behind the steering wheel” Of unscientific and illogical conclusions doubtless there are many!
Suddenly, the early morning talk show your wife is watching from under covers is interrupted, “The composition of the atmosphere is gradually changing. A dangerous imbalance is in some places. There seems to be too much oxygen in the air, which is speeding up the functions of the human body. Hospitals are being overwhelmed with respiratory, heart, and kidney problems. Thousands are dying. People are beginning to swarm into the nearest churches seeking God.”
If you are the strong kind of man, you can take any difficult news. But suddenly you hear your wife screaming hysterically. Then she dashes out of bed and grabs hold of your chest, “Honey, we’ve got to get oxygen tanks!”
As a college student you had read George Gamov’s book, “Matter, Earth, and Sky.” Gamov was a brilliant Russian-born theoretical physicist and cosmologist, who discovered alpha decay via quantum tunneling. In his book he had stated that the composition of the atmosphere is about 78 parts nitrogen and 21 parts oxygen. Although the density may vary from valley to mountain top, the ratio remains the same. You also remember reading long ago that too much nitrogen in the atmosphere slows down every normal function of the body, so that death would finally result, and that too much oxygen would also be harmful, since it would increase the activities of the body to such a pace that life could not last long. Being reasonably intelligent, you surmised that this ratio could not have developed by accident, since most accidents in chemistry usually result in explosions, especially as nitrogen is the basic ingredient of practically every explosive.
Hurriedly you forget about shaving, and rush to the car with your wife in her night clothes, and after purchasing oxygen tanks, you return home. With the change in the atmosphere, major problems emerge. From knowledge of geography and of people who live at higher altitudes, you decide to evacuate at once, and to leave all earthly possessions and head for the highest place on the planet. Two hours later, with oxygen tanks, you fly out to a remote village, high in the mountains of Tibet.
As you descend on Tibetan soil, from your iphone you hear, “Friends, due to unforeseen weather changes, we regret that for our team’s safety we are forced to sign off immediately! God must have been protecting us all this time!” Click!
Frank Allen, a biophysicist, a specialist in color vision, physiological optica, liquid air production, and glandular mutations, corroborates the facts in comments he made in an article entitled “The Origin of the World - by Chance or Design?” when he wrote, “The atmosphere of life-supporting gases is sufficiently high (about 500 miles) and dense, to blanket the earth against the deadly impact of twenty million meteors that daily enter it at speeds of about thirty miles per second. Among many other functions, the atmosphere also maintains the temperature within safe limits for life; and carries the vital supply of fresh water-vapor far inland from the oceans to irrigate the earth, without which it would become a lifeless desert. Thus the oceans with the atmosphere are the balance-wheel of Nature.”
You recall reading a statement somewhere, about the atmosphere being a mixture of gases in delicate balance with the Earth and the organisms that inhabit it. Gases are maintained at certain percentages (partial pressures), so that the planet will remain hospitable to life. The atmosphere protects life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night (the diurnal temperature variation). So many exciting conditions are necessary for life on earth that they could not possibly exist in proper relationship by chance!
Another question begins to gnaw at your guts, “Could the God you’ve been hearing about all your life have been controlling the balance of those gases all this time?”
