Horton Hears a Human

I'd like a tell a story
I hope to not confuse
So I'm putting up the Bible
And trying Dr. Seuss

There once was a building
Just outside a mall
Full of fine Christians
From hall to great hall

Each Sunday they prayed
"Help us seek Jesus' ways
"Send us a sign
"And we'll send you praise"

God replied quickly
Though not as expected
And outside the building
A new thing was detected

And one little boy
A bit curious
Saw signs of this thing
But he made no fuss.

Horton heard and saw something
Or someone, for sure
Who lived 'round the corner
He knew nothing more

Being quick witted
He alerted the flock
He told mom and brothers
Oh how he could talk!

And one by one each
Deigned take a look
Then glared at the boy
As their heads they shook.

"We don't see a thing"
They told the young lad
Then turned on their heels
And went away mad

Horton was stunned
It came as a shock
For he saw someone clearly
Darning a sock

Not a Christian perhaps
(He had none of the trappings)
No crosses or Bibles
With Dead Sea scroll mappings

In fact, he had almost
Nothing at all
No car, no boat
No bat or kickball

No bathroom or bed
And to tell you the truth
Up over his head
The man had no roof

No coat and no food
No water to drink
All this spoke to Horton
Who started to think

Of a sermon he'd heard
Between bouts on his knees
He knew what he'd found
He'd found "LEAST OF THESE!"

He must tell the pastor
He must tell the deacon
Surely they would
Descend on this beacon

From God who was clearly
Calling them out
Of their studies and prayers
Now hear the boy out!

Not that reading the Bible
Or praying are bad
But Jesus said clearly
There's more to be had

Through giving to others
Through sharing the faith
No one said following
Christ would be safe!

But the church's officials
Were just like his mother
Tho at least they thought
They saw something or other

"You found it," they said
"Just do as you please
"But stop bothering us
"About Least of These."

Horton thought that he
Would have gladly complied
But he sensed that the Lord
Wouldn't be satisfied

In fact about then
A voice boomed from the sky
Saying "You've done your part Boy
"But the time is nigh

"For someone much older
"And harder of heart
"To cast off their blinders
"And play their own part.

"But it's funny," God said
"When I ask "Who will go?"
"They either don't answer
"Or say they don't know"

Horton prayed all that night
And all the next day
That someone God called
Would enter the fray

For he knew in his heart
All that God wanted
Was for someone to stand
For the words they had flaunted

They had prayed for the chance
To live life like Christ
And here was this human --
They shouldn't think twice

Of bringing him meals
Or baking him bread
Or darning his socks
With some leftover thread

And oh the rewards
That each would receive!
For playing God's game
As part of His team

Horton smiled to think
He prayed they would hear it
He hoped one day soon
They'd come into the Spirit.
