In January 1976 I drove to school Lynchburg, VA. I saved a $150.00 for school, and I had a full tank of gas. I thought I was ready for school, anything else that I would need would be by faith. I would need to drive 320 miles. When I got to Lynchburg I had used ¾ tank of gas. It was late maybe 7 pm, I was not sure what to do so I call the school, and they suggested I go to a motel for the night. Now I was beginning to worry, I had $150 to my name, and did not know what I needed to get into school. I only had a ¼ tank of gas left. I went to the motel that cost was $10.00 a night. I never paid $25.00 a month. I laid in bed that night praying, and complaining. "Lord" I prayed, "I only have $150, and now I have less money, and I don't know what I am going to do, if I stay in the motel very many nights I will be broke." Worried, and not sure what I would do. I pray again, help me Lord.
The next morning I was lying in bed praying, then it seems like the Lord said to me. I drove 320 miles, and still had a ¼ tank of gas. I thought to myself, you big dummy, God did not call you to go to school to die, He will take of you. Trust Me, I will take care of you. So I said OK I will try.
The next day I drove to the school to enroll. They said I could stay at the school dorms in the downtown for $1.00 a night for two nights. God was already working on my behalf. I ate at the dorm, and I talk to the other students about where I could find a place to live.
God led me to the right student, because he said I could rent a room dirt cheap. I said dirt cheap to me was $25 a month. I went to check it out, and the student was right. Tom was the man I went to see.
Tom was a bachelor living in a house by himself with about 6 bedrooms. I talk to him about a room. He asks how much I could pay, I said I don't know, you tell me how much, and I will tell you if I can pay. He said, “will $25 a month be too much.” I said, “No, I will take it.”
In two days God provided me with everything I needed to get started in school.
