Throughout the Bible, God teaches us spiritual truths through the example of common, everyday things and activities with which we’re familiar.

An example from the kitchen: leaven (yeast) in dough illustrates sin in our lives (1 Cor. 5:6-8).

An example from the pasture: a shepherd feeding, watering and protecting his flock illustrates how the Good Shepherd, Jesus, takes such good care of us that He even died in our place (Psalm 23; John 10:1-18).

An example from the farm: sowing seed in different soils illustrates the affect of God’s Word on different hearts (Matt. 13:3-23; Mark 4:3-20; Luke 8:5-15).

In Psalm 126:5-6 the Lord teaches us a spiritual principle about His harvest, and gives us a promise concerning sowing and reaping:

"They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."

The Lord clearly wants all of His servants to be busy with the work of His harvest. Whether it’s plowing the field (Luke 9:62), sowing the seed (Matt. 13:3-23; Mark 4:3-20; Luke 8:5-15), or reaping the sheaves (Psalm 126:5-6), we should be faithful servants to our Master.

But there is more than just working involved here. Look at the promise the Lord makes to those who sow in tears: "They that sow in tears SHALL reap in joy."

When done God’s way, our efforts for Him will NOT be without reward. When we water the sowing of God’s Word with the tears of our prayers, we can expect to one day rejoice as we bring in a harvest!

Also, note the order of activity for doing God’s work as shown in these verses: going, weeping, sowing, reaping. We’ve already commented on weeping, sowing and reaping, but what about going?

God has a place of service, a mission field, for each and every one of His servants. Just where is your individual mission field? It’s the next unsaved person you meet!

A missionary doesn’t necessarily go outside of his country, or even his own community. A true missionary needs only to go outside himself.

So, let’s go out and begin sowing according to God’s plan. If we water our efforts with much prayer, we will one day see a bountiful harvest.
