Einstein commented once that he knew of 2 infinite things: the universe and human stupidity and he wasn't sure about the first one. I think it is even better put that human selfishness has that seeming infinite aspect, since so much stupidity proceeds from selfishness. Selfishness is like an abyss or a black hole into which, if one commits oneself to descend, there follows an endless spiral downwards. Self-centeredness is a bottomless abyss, though it may be more subtle than blatant selfishness. In fact, maybe that is exactly the abyss referred to in last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation. (One of the wonders of prayer is that it reflects a power that can lead us each time to a place where we are centered on others, because we are centered on The Other)
