Mt 26:62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?"
63 But Jesus kept silent.
Sometimes the best response to false accusations, unkind and unfair words, course jokes against your person is SILENCE. Silence not only because certain things are not worthy of an answer. But above all, silence with a view that God will answer for you, maybe not here in time but surely there in the day of God's vindication. For sure these two things were in the mind of Christ when He kept silent.
However, there are other reasons that must be considered:
When you open your mouth in defense, sometimes it goes awry and the situation will only get worse. We are experts in making things worse, it often happens when we open our mouths.
Also, human nature tends to side with those who are meek and lowly and those who say little. People prefer lambs than lions. The person who is very loud and boisterous against someone who wronged him is often the very person who is disliked by people.
When George Bush Jr. ran for the presidency of the United States of America, his rivals often peppered him with rough and unpleasant words in public. He read his Bible and was wiser because of it.
He chose not to defend himself and trade barbs with his opponents, mud-slinging would not be his style no matter how true. Instead, he focused on presenting his programs to the American people. The American people loved him for it and he won!
However, I must say that there are times that we should also speak up and stand for righteousness. Christ in many other occasions did not remain silent especially about sin. We must pray for wisdom and discernment as to when to speak boldly and when to lie low.
This is a good principle to notice:
Christ and the apostles kept silent when SELF was maligned and slandered. But when God's glory and God's gospel (including its ministry) and God's people were attacked they did not remain silent, they became bold and spoke against sin and unrighteousness.
