The Trek Between Communions

Remember the Passover for ancient Israelites when the were required to eat on the run so to speak? They ate standing and in a hurry (may we hurry as much out of our bondages) so as escape Egypt (Exodus 12) and make a three day journey into the wilderness where they had an appointment to worship their God. On the strength of that Passover meal they had to go a great distance expending a lot of energy. So it was to be a “crucial” meal in more respects than one.  Jesus too had to go a long way for us on the strength and nutrition of that last supper.  What I hadn’t considered before was that every time that we as believers receive communion together, as Jesus (who was later crucified at Passover time) commanded us to do, we are being spiritually as well as physically nourished to journey in this world amidst the details of our daily living until our next opportunity to receive the elements (or emblems of His body and blood) as a spiritual family. We need the grace imparted in that meal to meet the challenges and trials that await us outside that table.  And we know that communion, like baptism, is a means of appropriating that so much-needed grace.
