According to my amateur understanding, worship is a spiritual act whereby a person pays homage to deity, more supreme than oneself. In my observation over time however, I have come to discover a very disturbing trend. People are increasingly worshiping their possessions, their power and even their own selves.
Sure they may not build temples in honor of these things, or erect alters or carve out images, but the honor and awe with which they hoold these things says it all. I once heard a saying that goes like "the amount of time you spend engaging in a certain issue shows the amount of worship you accord it." Not only do I agree with the saying, but I would also adhere to add that how you spend your money already shows what direction your worship leans towards. After all, time is money.
So when you come across a person who would do whatever it takes to get mmore power or more possessions, you need not wonder what their object of worship might be. Such aa person could spend weeks or months, even years, away from their family in pursuit of these possessions and of more power. They are willing to sacrifice their desire to gain their objects of worship. How truly very sad.
What about those who just worship themselves: they go to whatever lengths to ensure their own satisfaction. They wouldn't think twice about back-stabbing the people closest or most loyal to them, just to gain their own personal comfort. Everything and everyone is at their disposal to use and abuse. Be very afraid should such a person try to befriend you. He or she has spotted something about you that they could use to promote themselves and once they are through exploiting you, they shall dump you mercilessly before you could even start to understand what just happens.
As for me, my allegiance and loyalty remains to the Lord God Almighty, the creator of the heavens and the earth. Worshiping him is also not without sacrifice for there cannot be worship without sacrifice. However, to worship him is to find life, true joy and fulfillment. That void that other people try to fill in by pursuing possessions, power and prestige, God is more than able to fill it and give you contentment as you journey through the path of life on our planet Earth.
