The battle against pornography addiction must be won if men are going to be the people God designed us to be, and our wives and children need us to be. Here are 4 steps that may prove to be helpful. They are not easy, because they require discipline and a new direction in one's thinking and use of time. As in any battle, sometimes a raid might be necessary as a step toward victory.
"R" stands for getting RID OF ANY MAGAZINES OR OTHER MEDIA that are keeping you where you are. It might mean also getting rid of friends or activities that are keeping you in bondage to this addiction. Change your READING habits so that your mind and eyes will be exposed to positive thoughts that will help transform your thinking.
"A" stands for ACCOUNTABILITY. Get one or more accountability partners who call you or meet with you once a week, or as often as possible, to see how you are doing in this area. These are close personal friends, or maybe a pastor or priest, who will not judge you but will encourage you and pray for you. Allow them to ask personal questions that really probe into your struggle and then be totally honest with them in your answers.
"I" stands for INVOLVEMENT. Get involved in a hobby, recreational activity, sport, or anything that will absorb your time and thoughts and take you away from porn. If you are a Christian, start doing something with a church or group of Christian men, or get involved in some ministry. You will do and become what you think about. Gradually the new thinking, use of time, and habits, should replace the old way of thinking, and your mind will be caught up less and less with porn.
"D" stands for DISCIPLINE. When you know you will be by yourself at home plan activities that will keep you busy and will keep your mind on other things. Being by yourself is when you are probably the most prone to falling into this addiction. Better yet, don't plan to be at home alone. Go somewhere or do something just to get out of the house. Get rid of the computer unless you need it for personal or family business. "D" also stands for determining to call upon the power of God through a personal relationship with Jesus, to help you.
Ask yourself this question: If your wife or children came home unexpectedly and came up behind you, what would they see you looking at? Would you quickly hide or turn off what you are viewing or would you invite them to sit down beside you and watch it with you?
Don't give up! Keep at it! Follow these steps persistently and I believe you will see victory, but it may not be a once-and-for-all victory. You may have to continue to RAID the enemy.
