Honor, Dignity, Tenderness And Respect

A Vietnamese colleague, a professional lawyer has spent a number of years caring for her elderly parents. Although an astute and articulate attorney, she will often times put aside the quest for money, influence and power to give time to her parents.
One day at the conclusion of church services, I said to her, “You do such wonderful things to and for your parents. You treat them with honor, dignity, tenderness and respect.”
“Why not. I should. I must,” she responded. “They’re irreplaceable.”
Ever since she uttered those words, I have had a desire and wish to place a sign on the doors or windows of every elderly person’s house or car—no matter their condition or state—with the words:
IRREPLACEABLE. TREAT WITH HONOR, DIGNITY, TENDERNESS AND RESPECT.
Prayer: Almighty Father, in this age of disrespect and a desire to rid ourselves of those who are old, teach us Lord to love, respect, honor and cherish all the elderly among us. Amen.
