Loving Yourself


As believers in Christ, we understand that the essence or our faith is love. Love is the fulfillment of the law. We are commanded to love God and others. What I want to talk about is loving yourself. They reason why is because so many Christians are hurting and feeling defeated. Perhaps rejection plays a part in this also. Loving yourself is critical to your development as a Christian.

Rarely do we hear messages or have discussions on loving ourselves. When we love ourselves we feel better about ourselves. A lack of self love can lead to self esteem issues and poor interpersonal relationships. I am not a psychologist but I have an understanding of humans since I am one. Although I can barely recall saying I love myself I do understand this to be a powerful tool for spiritual and personal growth.

How many people do you know who are dissatisfied with what they have become or who they are when no one is around? What about the numerous individuals who have suicidal thoughts? Some of us grew up in homes where love was not demonstrated, only pain and resentment and because of this, we reach adulthood with a cold heart.

There are many Christians who are depressed and I believe that the reason this issue often goes unaddressed is because Christians are not supposed to get depressed or oppressed for that matter, but that is not the reality for everyone. I`m not saying oppression, depression or suicidal thoughts are a result of not loving yourself but when you don't love yourself its easier to get this way. I believe that loving God and yourself makes it easier for you to love others. A reason I say this is because if self love is absent then you will probably see others the same way you see yourself. Barely do some of us spend time with ourselves because we do not like what we see in the mirror, so we keep ourselves busy as possible to distract us from us.

So the Word of God says he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. How do we love ourselves? I believe a way to love ourselves is to forgive ourselves of the issues that occurred in our lives, letting go of resentment be it personal mistakes or errors of others and see ourselves the way God sees us through Christ. We must allow the healing of God to take place. Love yourself as you are and at the same time cultivating what you want to become by the grace and power of God. Amen.
