Deep inside there’s a war going on. From the moment I awake and sometimes even while I sleep it calls me to do all the things that take me far from you. This flesh wants everything opposite that you want for me. So your Spirit fights for me. You are constantly reminding me that you must have control. You are stronger but you allow me to contend with my flesh. I wrestle back and forth. For if there were no wrestling there would be no joy in the victory. You allow me to choose whom I will serve, my flesh or your Spirit. You allow me to discover that I can subdue this flesh. One battle at a time, I come to learn that I must deal quickly and decisively with this flesh. For if I do not it will win. One thought of giving in, then two and soon three and all of a sudden it has taken me. My thoughts become the act. Oh how I wish this battle would end. To get rid of the constant struggle that rages inside me. Then you remind me that the very war that’s going on is the evidence that I am yours. I was dead in my sins before I received your saving grace and you came to live in me. Dead things have no war to win. I had no choice but to follow this flesh and the evil desires that it wanted. But then you came and set your home inside of me. Your mercy and grace has allowed me to have a choice and you give me the strength to win. You help me to see that my flesh is crucified with Christ and now it is your Spirit that gives me life. You also remind me that until my fleshly body dies, I will always have to contend with it wanting control. So I need to get the strongest weapon that I have and that is your written Word. I need to get it into my mind and my heart and do what it says. That is how I win! I must train my flesh to obey your Spirit that lives in me. The training will be painful but in the pain you will make me more like you. So as I awake another day and feel the battle raging on I can be assured I have all I need to come out victoriously.
