Early the other morning as I drove sleepily down the road on the way to work I looked up (and that was the key) and saw a high cross looming up against the morning sky it seemed to ascend two simple dark lines intersecting against the dawn light like a great sentinel over the road and the town and the island why I had never noticed its heavenly height I don't know. Then as I approached the church building (ours it so happens) on whose roof it perched like some giant slender blue heron it slowly began to shrink down to a more churchly and earthly size, but I couln't get out of my mind as I drove on how it had loomed so high into the vaulted sky of that morning as if to say, "you have no idea how far-reaching this all is and your part in it," ...and you're part of it.
