The Psalms
Psalm 107:1-9, 43 – Doing the Wave
Key Verses: (NRSV)

• 1: “O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever.” – Thankfulness to God should always be on our lips and in our hearts.
  
  
• 2: “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so…” – We are to proclaim to the world everything that God has done for us.
  
  
• 4-5: “Some wandered in the desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; ⁵hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.” – Without the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, our souls grow faint and dim.
  
  
• 6: “Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.” – A promise that God fulfills each and every time we seek His loving sustenance and grace.
  
  
• 8-9: “Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love, for His wonderful works to humankind. ⁹For He satisfies the thirsty and the hungry He fills with good things.” – Give thanks unto the LORD for His love endures forever.
  

Points to Contemplate:

• Are you giving thanks to the LORD? Or, are you taking His many blessings in your life for granted? Can you recall the times in your life that He has reached in and picked you up into His loving arms? How about those times when hopelessness filled your heart and loneliness descended upon you like a dense and chilling fog? Looking back, can you see how God’s love helped you to endure those times? In times of joy and celebration, do you make your praise and thanksgiving to God a priority? Or do the good times cause you to forget from where they came?
  
  
• Have you been redeemed? Haven’t your sins and transgressions been exchanged for a promise of eternal life? Haven’t you been washed cleaned by the Grace of God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ? If so, who are you telling? Since such a dramatic event has happened to you, are you overfilled with the excitement to share this good news with others? Are you willing to stand before the world, raising your hands in praise, and shouting loud hosannas to the LORD in thanksgiving? Or, do you tend to keep this good news to yourself? Are you reluctant to be expressive about what Christ has done for you? Are you worried by what others might think? In worship, are your hands in your pockets and your gaze towards the floor? Are you a spectator unwilling to stand, shout, and raise your hands as the “Wave” of praise sweeps past you? David in this Psalm suggests that your thankfulness and praise should be constantly on your lips.
  
  
• Has God ever turned you down? In times of trouble or distress that you have faced in your life, has God ever not responded to your prayers? Are you amazed by His faithfulness? Have you grown to rely on His steadfast love? When your soul thirsts and your heart hungers, have you learned to turn to God first and always?
  

Promise of the Gospel:

The promise within this Psalm is that no matter how extreme our distress or sin, God is able to reach through the darkness to help us. Once we experience His love, we are to constantly have our praise for Him on our lips, rejoicing and sharing in the Good News. Dependency on His love is a new way of life that leads us into daily communion with God’s steadfast love and into the midst of His good works that He as created for all of humankind.
