John 12:43 (AMP): “For they loved the approval and the praise and the glory that come from men [instead of and] more than the glory that comes from God. [They valued their credit with men more than their credit with God.]”

Flesh versus Faith: this is a never ending struggle we face as Christians. Inherently, we know the difference between right and wrong, but find it difficult (at times) to choose. In our humanity we crave the praises, honors and accolades of our peers. We willfully ignore God’s commandments to achieve temporary glory.

Paul warned of the duality of the human condition in his letter to the Roman believers: “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7:15 NIV). The Pharisee, Nicodemus, was a victim of this duality. Though he was intrigued by the truth of Jesus, he chose to tread lightly or not at all, for fear of losing favor among his peers.

As Christians, we need to stand boldly for our Lord. We need to choose the way of the Lord over the influences of the world. God’s holy word should constantly strengthen our resolve, and steer us clear of false glory.

Sunday, we will celebrate the Lord’s ultimate sacrifice for our sinful nature. May His sacrifice remind us of our loving duty to serve Him. Let us choose God’s glory over man’s titles and praises. Live the Word.
