Every girl's mother
Is destined to be both a
Model and a mentor;
One generation leading the next
Into a rite of passage
From girlhood to womanhood.

Blessed are those whose mother comes along side,
Teaching by example
And hearing the heart's cry of adolescence
Saying, "Show me how to do the things women do.
Teach me..."
And so together they set out on a journey toward maturity,
A welcoming into a new era;
One of opportunities, choices,
And new experiences.

But as for me, I felt abandoned
On a lonely, gray ocean.
My heart cried out to my mother
Wishing that she would come along side
And make the long journey with me,
To encourage and guide me on my quest,
But her thoughts and emotions
Lead her along a different way.
She wondered about the daughter
Whose thoughts were undisclosed
And guarded...

Too afraid and self-conscious to ask
For the help I needed,
I wondered what this force was that drew me
Into the unknown.

I set sail alone
Seeking a home on some distant shore.
I felt so unsure of what life held for me,
Not sure of how to make
This ceremonial passage into this new place
Known as Womanhood.

So many years have come and gone
Since I began this quest.
The journey has been long and hard,
And I am compelled
To see it through to the end.
I know now that this rite of passage
Can be so subtle and quiet,
So unobtrusive,
And yet, it makes its demands
On time and life;
Demands that encroach on
All the fears and insecurities of childhood
Laying them bare before my eyes
Forcing me to confront these demons
And do battle with them
For control over my soul.

I look to You to show me
Who I am created to be.
Teach and encourage me
As I follow You
In this quest to understand Womanhood;
I long for its truth and freedom
In my life.
By faith I trust and believe
That You are my Savior and Guide
To that blessed shore.
