Introduction
All Scripture quotes will be from The KJV unless noted otherwise. Any underline and highlight in Scripture quotes is added by me.
The first step in gaining Spiritual Power is to become a Christion by accepting The Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior and allow Him to become the Lord of your life. If a Christian wants to have Great Spiritual Power there are a few rules that must be followed. Not following these rules does not make one any less of a Christian, positionally with Jesus but I can assure you that they will be an anemic one.
Rule #1
Regular Bible Study is of the utmost importance. Paul gave these words of instruction to the young man Timothy: “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Tim. 2:15). Peter Gave the following instruction to the young converts of His day that still is good for a Christian today that desires more of God’s power. He said these words in (II Pet. 3:18) “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” The more you know the more you grow. If a Christian wants to know the needs and possibilities of their own spiritual life, Bible study is essential. There are many men in our colleges today who are conscientiously doing wrong; they never have listened to that
commanded of Jesus Christ, "Take heed that the light
which is in thee be not darkness." How a person is to know
their own shortcomings, spiritual needs and weaknesses without sBible study is
inconceivable, for that is the only book which shows what we are, not only our needs but our possibilities.
There are too many Christians that are content to live in the valley or to roam about among the foothills and they could be climbing upon the peaks of Spiritual Power. We might say that the only way for one to overcome doubts, temptations, passions, evil imaginations, unclean, unholy, and proud thoughts, is through frequent Bible study that is applied to their life to purify and to meet this terrible conflict. David said this in(Ps. 119:11) “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” If we want to live more than ordinary spiritual lives as Christians it is necessary that we be great feeders upon the Word of God, which is not only quick but powerful. De Quincey divided all literature
into the literature of knowledge and the literature of power – the bible is pre-eminently the literature of
power. Jesus said this to His disciples; “ If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (Jn. 15:7) And still further, we might make this additional statement, that without spiritual Bible study, other spiritual helps may often lead us in danger, and ultimately they may be abandoned. Take the matter of meditation; without the Bible, meditation may lead a man to morbid introspection. Secret prayer is not a monologue, but is a dialogue. We must feel the importance of Bible study, not merely as Christians but also as Christian examples to the world. You should view your mid week and Sunday morning studies as refreshers and Not your main source of Bible study
If you want to acquire the great Spiritual Power that is available to you, you must study with great intensity the mind of Jesus Christ that is only revealed in His Word.
The Excuses for not engaging in regular Bible study
Excuse #1 I don’t have the time. This is a thoughtless and flimsy excuse to say the least. What you are saying is, I don’t have enough time to keep alive Spiritually and possess the power that is available to you. I s however interesting to note that people will find time to do what they really want to do. It’s not a matter of having the time but prioritizing the things that you dedicate that time to. Experience proves that the person who puts this first and keeps it first does not suffer in other things; that is the practical test.
Excuse #2 I can’t understand it. When I hear this one I quiver with fear for that person because they have just told me that they are not a Christian. See (I Cor. 2:14) that says; “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” This person will Never experience the joy of Spiritual power until they get the Holy Spirit in them and follow the rules.
Excuse#3 I read and study and nothing happens. This may be a true statement and can be the result of one of two reasons; It could be the deceptive trick of the devil to get you away from doing what he knows will bring you victory and he will use this to make you feel justified in doing it. The other reason may for this being true may just be YOU.Let me explain this. If you are a hearer through reading and ignoring what God is saying to you no results will come as a result of your veneered actions. The Lord sumed it up for us through the pen of James when he wrote these words; “ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:23-25) It is obvious here that the person who hears God's message through reading and does nothing to correct his situation will not be blessed.
Now that we know the excuses for not reading and studying the source of Spiritual Power let's get back on thre road to Spiritual Power and make it to the end and accomplish our goalof possessing Spiritual Power.
Rule #2 Frequent Pyayer and fasting.
These two activities of the Christian life are often neglected by Christians and I believe it to be because of a lack of understanding and again this is fueled by satan to keep a Christian from doing it. Most Christians believe that in order to fast you must restrict the intake of all food and liquids. Since eating is one of the most enjoyable pleasures of life people have a tendency to shy away from anything that will prohibit doing it. The fact is that a person can fast very effectively with a limited intake ih the purpose of the heart is right. A good example of this is found in The Old Thestament in what ha come to be known as the Daniel fast. Daniel and his three captive friends wanted wanted to please God and not themselves with the kings food. They requested a diet of vegetables and water for 10 days. They were also seeking God's face during this time and at the end they looked better and stronger than the ones that had been eating the kings food.We have been told from childhood in Sunday School that Jesus fasted 40 days and He did but it was only a food fast. He consumed water during that time. I mention this because it has been medically proven that the body can live for long periods of time on water only. The bible says that when Jesus finished His fast He was hungry only. See it here in (Luke 4:2) that says; “Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.” Jesus told His deciples that the Spiritual Power that they desired came from fasting and prayer. See it here ( Matt. 17:18-20ab & 21) that says; “And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Eating is one of the natural needs that is a must to sustain life but it can lead to your detriment if it gets out of control. The bible warns against this. See it here at (Phil. 3: 18-19) that says; “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. ” Be honest with yourself and answer this question; Do I eat to live or do I live to eat?
Conclusion.
This is one of the greatest goals a Christian can have but it does not come easy because your enemy the devil will be buisy trying to detract you and devour you if he could.. The Bible, which is the greatest sources for theGood Spirtual Power tells us that that there is a blessing for those that continue to do what it tells us is the Right things to do. One of my favorite Scriptures come to mind here and it is (Gal. 6:9) that says; “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Read (I Cor. 15:58) for more comfort in hanging in there.
Spirituality costs! Will you pay what it costs? May the Spirit of God help you to answer that question and give you the Power to confirm yes and live through it..
