Sin and guilt is like bad food and food poisoning. One cannot exist without the presence of the other. Everyone who calls him or herself human has done at least one thing he or she is not proud of. And every Tom, Dick and Harry would admit that guilt is the worst feeling; one so horrible and self-destructing that it can make one commit suicide so as not to feel its torment any longer. That’s how dangerous guilt can be.

As sealed as the human fate is, sin is inevitable. The wages of sin is death, the Bible tells us. We are all born with the innate conviction to seek retribution for the wrongs we do. But because sin dwells in our very nature, by the twinkle of an eye, we are back to square one-feeling guilty for doing something we promised ourselves never to repeat.

But I have good news for you! We have a God whose love for us surpasses the most grievous sins we can ever commit. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him, (Psalm 103:11- RSV). And because He loves us this much, He came to die in our place, taking away the guilt and shame that comes with sin. As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us, (Psalm 103:12-RSV).

You don’t have to feel guilty about your past mistakes anymore. Jesus dealt with that more than 2000 years ago. All it takes is to admit your wrongs and believe in Him to cleanse you and take them far away from you. You are assured of that as long as you believe that the east and the west would never find each other. How far is the east from the west, anyway? Just picture Jesus nailed onto the cross. It is as far as one scarred hand to the other.

It is not your responsibility to make your sins go away; so don’t even try. Hand it all over to Him who is able to set you free from the bondage of sin and guilt. And enjoy the life He meant for you in all its fullness.
