Robert Novak And A Column YOU Would Have Read
By
COLUMBA KNOX
I lived at a house that was on the longest country block.
The other side of the street and just to the side was a long farm.
That being the apex of a triangle; the angle this way would take you to where I was living; the angle the other way would take you across a street and to the home of Robert Novak.
Robert Novak was a Columnist in hundreds of Newspapers.
I am at school; its the 5th grade; standing behind the teacher;
she is reading what I wrote. I am getting amazed; she is understanding what I am saying, I had not said anything --- writing. She has arrived at the end of the writing; she, sitting there, is looking up and speaking,
"You have a profound way of writing."
I wrote a number of writings.
She and I put them together in book form.
They had groovy bindings (this was the 1970's).
Walking to and from school I had this thought ---
I want to knock on the door and talk to Robert Novak about writing.
Though I was somewhat shy and yet a deep thinker; not liking undivided attention; preferring the the written word more so than speaking; I had absolute confidence at my ability of putting words on paper.
I learned at this time that Robert Novak had a nickname, "Pitbull Of Conservatism". I had stopped many a times at the beginning of his slighty long driveway, looking at his front door, having the following thinkings ---
What is a Pittbull??? When he opens the door, will he yell??? Will he tell me to scram??? What is a Pittbull??? Will he be standing there looking at me that I had the nerve to knock??? Will he say, "That's nice. Get back to me in a few years and we will talk"??? What is a Pitbull??? Would he bark at the idea that I was a writer??? (O, dear GOD, let it not be so; I know that is what I am) Will I speak clearly so he would know what I was there for??? What exactly is a Pitbull!!!
I never learned figure---of---speech in elementry school.
Years later Robert Novak and I started a correspondence, emailing.
I sent him an email where I declared that we had been neighbours;
that writing is breathing;
that I knew he wrote for---a---living;
that I wanted to knock on his door and talk with him about writing.
The initial email I got from Robert Novak had only these words ---
"You Should Have Knocked!!!"
After sending emails back and forth a few times, I sent an email that asked him if I would be allowed to send him a few writings; that after he had read those, he would say whether I was qualified to be a Columnist.
He said to send them. I sent nine. They had different topics.
An unexpected email arrived; it was from Robert Novak. He said that he will read the writings and let me know what he thinks but not to expect that for 3 weeks because he was going to be away.
Time kept ticking onward, I kinda sorta forgot I sent him the writings because what was having my intrested attention (while I was waiting for his reply), I was trying to win the National Investment Challenge. There were over 14,000 who wanted to be the best of that. You started with a fictious amount of $530,000; a few months later, I had the account at over 1.3 million dollars. You cannot throw darts at a financial page and do the same. I almost won. I got as high as 4th. For three weeks before the Challenge ended, my name appeared in a top---13 listing of the Challenge that was in the business section of USA Today newspaper. The grand fun of the Challenge was beating those who were making a living buying and selling stocks.
Robert Novak sent an email that he had read the writings.
The word he used quite often, when he was saying
how much he liked how I wrote, was BOLD. He always capitalised that word.
He concluded by declaring he could see me being successful as a Columnist.
Robert Novak was going to make me a Columnist starting with 80 newspapers. We sent quite a few emails to each other about that; the topics being --- The consequences of having a Column; That how I write would have the Column popular///a lot of readers in a short time; That enemy newspapers woud want the Column even though they would hate the writer and what I wrote about; Death threats; How a Columnist gets paid; That he would not allow a pen name; He would always be awaiting the next writing.
O, for a number weeks the struggle I had at deciding ---- Columnist!!!
If the answer was yes, YOU would have been reading that Column for a number of years. The answer was, no; it was not the Providential time.
I am ready now to be a Columnist.
The Cause of the Column --- King Jesus, Glorified.
The Topics --- Spiritual///Temporal.
The Difference from other Columns ---
for starters, you will not be bored;
plan regularly quoting from old newspapers;
the boldness of the writings.
At the end of each of the writings of the Column
there will be the following words ---
Countryboy Returning To The Corn Fields.............
YOU will like reading the Short Story ---
BARNSTORMING Them To Thee SAVIOUR
