O faith, thou art the substance of that which is unseen;
The saints of old believed God, and trusted not in vain.
Though tempted sore and tested, they looked beyond to see
The blessed coming Promise--the Christ of Calvary.

O faith, thou art the substance of that which is unseen:
A bridge to span the chasm of earth and heaven between.
By faith the martyrs triumphed, by faith the saints o'ercame,
By faith they gained the victory through Jesus' precious Name.

By faith the prophets saw Him, Whom all their souls adored;
Beyond the mists of ages, they owned Him as their Lord.
Pursued by Satan's minions, they looked beyond the grave,
And trusting Christ's redemption, they trusted Him to save.

Though oft beset by tyrants, by Satan sore assailed,
They laid hold of His promise, and by His grace prevailed.
They traced their Master's footsteps: oft through a veil of tears
They saw the coming glory, beyond the passing years.

Betrayed by friends and kindred, they faced the sword and stake,
And power to them was given to bear it for His sake.
Afflicted and tormented, they walked the road Christ trod,
And found the path of tears led them to the home of God.

Though homeless here and wandering, with no abiding place,
By faith they fought the battle, by faith they ran the race.
This world was never worthy their faithful steps to bear,
And now they dwell in heaven, and all its glories share.

The saints all seek a city whose Ruler is the Lord;
They judged Him to be faithful, and trusted in His Word.
Though pilgrims here, and strangers, they sought the home above,
Where burdens all were lifted, and grief was lost in love.

For lo! They sought a city the faithless never see,
And though they could have turned back, they pressed on faithfully.
By faith they saw it shining, beyond this earthly sky,
By faith they reached its portals, and now they rest on high.

O faith, thou art the substance of that which is unseen:
O Eden's fields unwithered, and trees forever green!
O Life's pure river flowing, where sin and sorrow flee--
O Lord of all the faithful, there let us dwell with Thee.
