LOVE ENGRAVED IN STONE


Fifty two years of marriage and still very much in love, but what else can one expect when their love was engraved in stone.
An elderly couple shared their story with me while he was a patient at the V.A. hospital where I was employed. His wife sat with him day after day while he battled Terminal Cancer. She shared a beautiful story with me.
Two years before they said their marriage vows they walked through the woods. The place was then known as Apple Orchard. As her husband kicked gravel he stumbled across a pebble shaped like half of a heart with the jagged edge in the center. They walked a little further and his eyes fell upon another pebble with the same shape. The most amazing thing was that the jagged edges fit perfectly together. She carried them in her purse for over fifty years along with two poems that he had written.
“This will be a symbol of our love forever,” he
told her.
To her this was a symbol of God’s love and blessing on their marriage. He fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, and she went into the nursing home to finish out her life. I can only assume that she still carries the stones with her and shares her story with others. That is if she hasn’t gone to her Heavenly home. This gave me a new outlook on life.
