THE WAY OF LOVE

Recently, I went to a restaurant that relied on volunteers and donations from patrons, rather than charging for a meal. Someone in our group said, “This is what being a real Christian is all about.” But, the restaurant had Buddhist influences, so it got me thinking, “What do people think Christianity is all about?” and “Since Christianity doesn’t have the monopoly on compassion and good works, what makes it unique?” The short answer is JESUS, for the name Christian means “follower of Jesus Christ”.

So, what is Jesus about, you may ask? JESUS emphasized that LOVE must be the distinguishing characteristic of anyone who followed Him. He said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you. By this shall all people know that you are My disciples if you have love, one for another.”

The Way of Love He talked about moved Him to feed the hungry, heal the sick, forgive His enemies, and give His life as a ransom for many. His toughest words were for those who played religion and often said one thing but did another – especially the religious leaders. His most compassionate words and actions were for the downtrodden and the hurting who desperately needed hope and came to Him for answers.

Much good has been done over the centuries by the followers of Jesus, but sadly, there have been too many whose words and actions have brought the name of Jesus into disrepute. Still, we need to remember that Jesus calls us to follow Him, not the hypocrites that sometimes claim to represent Him. He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Follow JESUS today.
