“The song of songs, which is Solomon's.” (Song of Solomon 1:1 KJV)

Have you ever wondered why some Bible's call this book the Song of Solomon and others call it the Song of Songs? It is a very good love story with specific hints for those who are looking for them, and in a sense those hints remind us of another love story between Christ and His bride. It is very special that a story of love can be thought of in terms of a song. A song where the right notes are played in the right order in the right pitch and tone and in the right rhythm. Also like a dance where the steps are not only in good synchronization but are in the correct order, in the right timing as directed by the music, and one notices immediately if they are out of step.

I have previously written in the article Song about some of the things that our song can reveal. However, more than what the contents of the song reveals about people; the ordering, the timing, the melody of the individual, and the harmony of the body reveal a great deal about both the existence of and greatness of the composer. In C.S. Lewis's book Mere Christianity, he describes the “moral law” as the tune and “instincts” as the keys on the piano that are ordered in their correctness by the tune. How much greater than is the author of that tune? One almost has flashbacks to Nullah, the little boy character in the 2008 movie Australia, who effectively adds dimension by crossing the idea of song with an old art of aboriginal chants. Yet God goes so much deeper, truer, and moves with even greater certainty.

If God is love (see 1 John 4:8 and 1 John 4:16), then He is the composer of the music and the choreographer of the dance that ordains, prepares, directs, and furnishes all that we need. When He sees the desires of our heart in our song of prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and grievances; He makes room for those desires. When He sees that we are out of step; He stops the music and provides a way to come back. In Solomon's song, I wonder if in the couple's time together, her seeking after a lost opportunity with him, and their reunification; if Solomon was thinking of the song of songs that was dancing in his heart as placed there by God?
