Having a little trouble letting the past go? That is exactly what happened to the children of Israel. Moses being obedient to God overcame Pharaoh's demise to imprison the Israelites. Through God's intervention, Moses led the people right out of Egypt. Oh it was better than any theatrical event you will ever go see. The people of Israel left most of their things behind and hurriedly fled from the Pharaoh upon Moses' command. Following closely on their heels were the stallions and the soldiers of Pharaoh's army. Pharaoh regretted his defeated decision and decided to stop the great exodus by hunting them down. Before they approached the border of the great Red Sea, they were sure they were going to die. They could hear the footfall of many horses and the call of the army nearing their defenseless party.
Then they said to Moses, "Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? "Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness."
Exodus 14:11 -12
Oh my goodness! Isn't it unbelievable to witness the Israelites tasting the joy of freedom in one moment and longing for captivity in another? Now the plot thickens as Moses calls out to God for guidance. You then see Moses lift up the rod of God over the water and the children of Israel advance through the midst of the sea on dry land. Even Hollywood can't get this one right. Can you imagine the chaotic silence as they crossed that sea most of the night? But wait! -Before Pharaoh could recapture them, a great cloud of fire falls between Pharaoh's army and God's people. There was no way to break through the barrier. I can almost see God standing up from His throne, with His arms crossed and asking the Egyptians two simple words, "Going somewhere?" Sitting on the end of my chair as I read on, I see that the Israelites safely make it across the sea. Then Egypt's great army, completely confounded, advance towards them into the sea only to be swallowed up by the impending waves. Hey, and I thought I was dramatic!
In reality many of us tasting freedom long to go back to our old ways. Oh we may not vocalize it as such. But we have had to lay down old habits, old relationships and past successes to move forward with God. God does not work in the past. He only works in the present towards the future. The only thing we need to look back at is the blood of Christ covering our sin, very much like the sea that covered up Pharaoh's army. Do you find yourself longing for the good old days of captivity? Have you been holding on to a piece of your past in case a part of your future doesn't work out? I have even had to go back and answer that question myself. It is only when we let the past, be the past, that God can bless our present and our future. No more crying out for the good old days of Egypt my friends. God is doing a new thing, and oh how my heart longs to see it!
