There appears to be a misunderstanding of sin in our church today. I know that a well known television preacher said his church doesn't deal with sin. We have churches supporting abortion and homosexuality. We now even have churches allowing homosexuals to be clergy. It appears we have a license to sin. I had someone ask me if I meant we had to obey the rules in Leviticus. We are considered mean if we speak out against homosexual marriage or even partial birth abortions. If you look at the following paragraph you can see that isn't what Jesus meant.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:17-18
Clearly Jesus didn't come to do away with the Law. Jesus added truth and grace to the Law but he didn't come to abolish the Law. I guess one might say he is addressing the Jews only. We as Gentiles don't know the Law let alone the smallest letter. Where do we find the Law? We can find the answer in Romans 2:12-16. You can read below.
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them. This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
Clearly you can see Paul says that if you're apart from the Law addressing Gentiles you will perish by the Law. This can be very confusing if we don't know the Law. Christians know exactly what it means to perish and want no part of that. Fortunately Paul tells us that the Gentiles do by nature things required by the law. The Law is written on our hearts. Our conscience is guided now by the Holy Spirit rather than the nature with which we were born.
Jesus came to provide the sacrifice to atone for our sins. The animals that were sacrificed only covered sins as those who obeyed the Law waited in Sheoul on the side called Abram's bosom. Christ was the sacrifice that forgave sins. He was the substitute for the Lamb.
We are still required to repent for our sins. The crucifixion did not give a license to sin but to eliminate the rigors of the Law in that we needn't offer a lamb or anything other sacrifice. We have been relieved of the rigors of the Law which, as Gentiles, is written on our hearts.
