Since God is unlimited in His nature, no finite creature can fully comprehend Him. Therefore, we cannot form a mental or material image that portrays His inexhaustible being. When we try to construct a picture of Him, all we end up with is a dead idol, not the living Lord. This truth is clearly manifested in Romans 16:27, which reads, “To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.” Where we can learn four key facts about God.

1. HIS UNIQUENESS. The word “only” expresses the truth that the all-powerful King of the Bible is God alone. He makes this point quite clear through the prophet Isaiah:

“I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45: 5-6).

The affirmation that there is just one God is also a declaration of His uniqueness. There is no other being like Him. He is one of a kind, incomparable, unrivaled, matchless, and unsurpassed. We cannot reduce Him to anything in creation, for He far exceeds anything we know now or ever could know.

2. HIS WISDOM. The one God is also infinitely “wise.” This means not only that He is supremely intelligent and knows all things, but also that He is unfathomably perceptive and accurate in His purposes and plans. No wonder Paul could exclaim:

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?” (Romans 11: 33-34).

3. HIS SON. The primary, revelatory link between the infinite God and finite man is God the Son, Jesus Christ. Without Him, there would be no visible manifestation of God that we could even partially comprehend (John 1:14; 1 Timothy 6:16).

Similarly, there would be no way for us to come before God free from condemnation without the redemptive work of His Son. Perhaps that is why Paul gives his benediction “through Jesus Christ. (Romans 16:27).

4. HIS ETERNAL GLORY. His glory is the visible manifestation of His character. The fullest revelation of the Lord's glory is Jesus Christ. As the Gospel of John states, “The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

In His wisdom God has made it possible for those who were once bound to earth by their own sinful depravity to be loosed from their sins and to know the throne of God as eternal home. He has made it possible for men who were made lower than the angels to rise higher than the angels. He has made it possible for us to become sons and daughters.

For all this there can only be one doxology--”...to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.”
